EDoL: Celtic connections from Oaklea Grange
Today at Oaklea Grange, we celebrated the European Day of Languages with a fun assembly! We explored Europe’s diverse languages and compared them to our own. Students tried speaking new languages and played games like guessing countries from pictures. We discovered Gaelic Irish is quite similar to Welsh. So exciting!
Euroscola event: Rights of Women
We joined a live event on women’s rights in Europe, chatting with MEPs and other EU schools. We asked about the gender pay gap and what the EP is doing about it. We learned about legislation, the 14% pay gap, and the push for equal pay in similar jobs.
Trip to World Food Buffet
Oaklea Grange organized a fun trip to a World Food Buffet to explore different cultures’ cuisines. We tasted sushi, Indian, tapas, pasta, Welsh cakes, Chinese, and pizza. Our top pick was Italian! It was fascinating to see how cultures enjoy small bites and use chopsticks. We left feeling happily stuffed!
International Mother Language Day
At Oaklea Grange, we celebrated International Mother Language Day with a school assembly. We explored endangered languages and ways to preserve them. We discussed unique communication methods and the importance of keeping traditions alive. We watched videos on click languages, yodelling, and Welsh speakers in Patagonia. We even spoke Welsh and enjoyed language-themed activities!
Screening of 20,000 Species of Bees for the LUX Audience Award
The Junior Ambassadors at Oaklea Grange voted on films and chose between *20,000 Species of Bees* and *On the Adamant*, focusing on mental health themes. We watched *20,000 Species of Bees*, created a mind map, and discussed characters and themes. We also debated the impact of subtitles and rated the film online.
MP/MS visit and workshop
Oaklea Grange had awesome visits and workshops with their local MS and MP. They learned about devolved laws, voting in Wales, and debated important issues. They explored how to become an MS or MP, discussed Parliament’s role, and even talked about Brexit. They also brainstormed ways to boost support and funding.
