Model United Nations

As part of their Europe Day celebrations, Wellington School Junior Ambassadors (JAs) organised a Model UN conference for the Primary 7 classes. As the participants were younger, the JAs decided to have one committee (Human Rights) and to encourage the Delegates to work in pairs or threes. They chose the topic of Child Labour and selected twelve countries for the Delegates to represent. These countries were European Union countries or countries with which EU states had historical links. Templates and help sheets were prepared for the Delegates, too.

The JAs ran the whole event from the Opening Ceremony to the Closing Ceremony. They facilitated the debates and observed the quality of the contributions from the Delegates. This allowed them to choose and reward the best delegations at the end of the event. The Delegates completed an online evaluation after the event and reported that they had developed research, communication and teamwork skills. They particularly enjoyed the debates and said that they would like the opportunity to take part in similar events in the future. Our JAs developed their leadership skills and will put these to the test next session at an international MUN. The event was moved from 9 May to a later date as the participants were on a residential course on Europe Day.
