A chance for French-speaking Senior Ambassadors to network and for Senior and Junior Ambassadors to hear from MEP Pascal Canfin (Renew, France) and discuss his opinion on environmental policy in the EU.

All Senior Ambassadors from all EU+UK countries are welcome to this webinar, which will be conducted in French. Junior Ambassadors are welcome to the the exchange with the MEP (from 11:00), this will also be in French. The event will take place on the 7th of March.

• Get to know each other (maybe with a view to planning common European projects?)
• Share best practices on how to talk about Europe in class
• Learn more about the European Parliament’s role and activities by focusing on a particular topic, here the Green Deal.

At the beginning of 2025, Pascal Canfin was the keynote speaker for an online European seminar for Ambassador Schools. At that time he was the chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on the Environment, Climate and Food Safety (ENVI). During the webinar he assessed the progress of the European Green Deal while the 9^th Legislature was approaching its end.

More than a year later and in a radically different political context, he has again been invited to take stock of the current state of climate policy in Europe.

Several countries, including France, are calling for a “regulatory pause.” New political forces in the European Parliament give more space to climatoscepticism. The new European Commission, in its work program, seems to favour competitiveness over climate action. Meanwhile, the election of Donald Trump has put a halt to international climate efforts. Is the European Green Deal being dismantled? What future awaits this ambitious set of rules aimed at protecting the environment?

All these questions and more will be raised with Pascal Canfin.
