Using Languages in the Workplace

To encourage their peer group to consider how languages can be used in the workplace, Wellington School’s Junior Ambassadors organised a workshop for them. As a starting point, they used short films provided by the British Council where people talk about how they use languages at work. The group watched twelve videos and chose the three that they felt their friends would enjoy most. They considered gender-balance and the effectiveness of delivery. Their Ambassadors wanted to encourage the audience to participate.

At the start of the workshop, they were asked to write down three jobs where languages can be used. The task was repeated at the end and the results showed a much wider range of opportunities to use languages in the workplace. The Ambassadors also designed activities for the audience to do during the workshop to ensure engagement. The workshop was so successful that the Ambassadors were invited to repeat it with younger pupils prior to option choices.
